Test file for PDF-ness?

Problem: check a file if it is really a PDF file.

Given an arbitrary file (basically, uploaded by a user, or, better
say, upload being attempted), I have to check if it has signs of being
really a PDF file. Is there anything common among PDF files in the
header, and if so - what and where?

Thanks for any advice in advance.
