I lack time to respond to your post thoroughly, but two quick points:

Nope. Used HP-UX 10.x for several years, but that ended about four
or five years ago. I still have an account on a HP-UX box, and my
ISP runs some Sun-flavored unice (don't have time to check).

To be honest, I lack both the time and the interest. There's no
utility in it for me, since my work is strictly MS.

Ah, but that's the thing. No glue. None. The system I described
uses MS-SQL Server, Excel and PowerPoint out of the box. There is
NO programming required. Given the MS GUI query editor, you don't
even have to know SQL.
