I'm sure you aren't very familiar with early UNIX environments,
or you wouldn't be under the impression that 2004 Linux systems
are in the same class. They are far more different than the
difference between MS-DOS and Windows.
You are probably aware however that MS-DOS (even in it's later
forms) was far and away inferior to SVR3 in terms of functionality.
(I.e. about 10 years behind the times). The very idea that Microsoft
products have always been at the forefront of computing
technology is a joke. There is also nothing technical permitting the
functionality of an application on Windows which cannot be done on
Linux, or a Mac running OS X.y. I see nothing missing in the Linux
kernel which makes it impossible to replicate the functionality of
Wingrep, or any other Windows application. That can't be said of
moving things the other way however, the previously mentioned lack of
fork() being one. Let's not even get started about how badly MS
poisoned the RPC waters.
