'Linux' is a kernel. It doesn't even provide a bootable system, by itself,
you need a lot of other stuff for that. Could you please elaborate why you
find this modularity a "con" ?

Quite. MS-Windows, however, *only* provides a graphical environment.
The non-graphical environments you may have seen at one time or another
are bad hacks at best.

That's usually only true for commercial products, which stereotypically
require you to have a very specific version of Solaris. This is usually
because the programmers use undocumented internal calls, make assumptions
about the setup of the boot manager, and whatnot.
