'Linux' is a kernel. It doesn't even provide a bootable system, by itself,
you need a lot of other stuff for that. Could you please elaborate why you
find this modularity a "con" ?

) Absolutely. Better yet, use a non-GUI OS.
You seem to be stuck in the idea that GUI-ness is a feature of the
operating system.
) I agree. However, given that many computing problems ARE best in

Quite. MS-Windows, however, *only* provides a graphical environment.
The non-graphical environments you may have seen at one time or another
are bad hacks at best.

You don't need a GUI to have multiple windows, you know.
Tell me, do you use the mouse much when editing ? To access menus ?
To select pieces of text ?

Lotus Bloats is vile.
You should really look at QT, it's quite nice.

) Because, IME, you end up with the worst of all worlds.
You mean the least common denominator. Not the same.
) I did say "highly" portable. Are you going to tell me that UNIX
) users using obsolete releases don't also suffer from the same issues?
That's usually only true for commercial products, which stereotypically
require you to have a very specific version of Solaris. This is usually
because the programmers use undocumented internal calls, make assumptions
about the setup of the boot manager, and whatnot.
) I KNOW that's the case, since it was a major issue for us in trying

A single swallow doesn't make it spring.
