"A" window manager? No no, this is Unixworld, where you almost always
choices -- which of course has its good and bad points. The Linux
distribution(s) I know about ship with several window managers, plus
two desktop environments, plus X itself, etc., etc. I'll leave it to
someone else to try delineate the differences among all of these things
-- I'm sure I'd get it wrong, but I know just enough to be aware that
"the GUI" on most Unix system actually consists of more than one piece,
and for at least some of the pieces you have more than one choice.

And I'll paraphrase here a story I heard in another newsgroup: New
Linux user gets the o/s installed -- he thinks, so he goes to the local
expert and says "I think I've got this thing installed and running.
What's the desktop supposed to look like?" Local expert replies
"What would you like for it to look like?" Perfect Unixworld answer,
of course, but apparently the new user found it more frustrating
than helpful!
