Essay on Complexity in Programming Languages?

Hello,

I'm looking for general reading material, related to this
http://biharmonic.org/czero/archives/000203.html, specifically,
something on how markup and general programming languages tend to
become more and more general/complex over time. Or on the design of
domain specific markup languages.

I'm not a comp. sci. major, just an amateur programmer, so adjust
recommendations accordingly :)
