Patent source code?

I am an amateur programmer, and I have a great idea for a new type of video
game engine. It is very unique from other engine styles. I want to make a
demo and submit it to game companies for possible job opportunities and
work futher on the engine at a company. Problem is that I don't want anyone
to steal my idea, and I don't want wealthier companies to make games
similar to mine and snatch up all my business. Can I patent the general
"idea" of the engine? Would this safeguard my idea from other companies and
the ones I submit demos to?

To further specify what I am talking about, consider the first raycasting
engine. Would it have been possible for that programmer to safeguard
his/her idea and prevent other companies from using it in their games
without paying royalties?

Thanks in advance
