Are you more interested in flashy applications that have dialogs
(forms) that run on single computers? Or are you more interested in
getting into serious data processing, where the user interface isn't as
important as the processing itself? For the former, I recommend
HyperCard or Visual Basic. For the latter, I recommend LISP. If you
have access to a Unix shell account which supports running CGI
applications using any programming language you could use normally,
then you can use LISP for that, so that you can easily produce
applications that you can demonstrate to or make available to anyone on
the net anywhere in the world.
