The comparison isn't with Linux; yours was a statement of fact regarding
windows that Ia nswered with "consoles!" and Malcolm compared consoles
with a PC.

Well, yes; but take the money saved from upgrading your OS and your
hardware and invest it in one or two consoles and the price offset
(consoles games cost a bit more), and I think many (most?) people won't
be worse off.
Wine goes some way to further level the field, see

hardware cost kicks back in.
