software engineer? Please answer some q's

Hello,
I am doing a research project on software engineering. To get the
information accurate, I was asked to interview someone. Instead, I am
asking computer engineers, or something like them, to answer some
questions for me. What is the working environment like? What are you
hours like? How much do you get paid? What do you do exactly? What
are some skills that are required? How much schooling do you
recommend? Is the industry booming or slowing? What are my chances?
 If you would answer some of these questions, or more, I would be very
