The number of computer science majors in the U.S. and Canda has fallen
sharply, 23% in a single year according to a story in USA Today at
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-08-08-computer-science_x.htm ,
so a 1.3% decline in programming jobs -- basically zero -- may indicate
IMPROVING prospects for U.S. programmers in the future. I think
computer programming skills and knowledge of computer science are
valuable even if one does not become a professional programmer. Lots of
people have careers that are not directly related to their college
major.
