Yes.
Yes, as in, I have all of those machines. I recommend one of each.
Solaris can be run on X86, but it does not like to dual boot
with other systems, and in any case, the market for x86 Solaris
apps is zero, so you are going to have to try out on a sparc in
any case.

Compling any but the largest of programs is not a significant
factor anymore. Todays machines long ago passed the point were
compile time is a factor. They are trying to edit video, or
run Doom3. The power available is far in excess of what is
needed to compile things.
As an example, I compile libraries against the full Windows
API headers, notorious for being a time hog, its 100's of
thousands of lines of code, in less than 5 minutes.

Unix is a better environment to write programs to, Windows/Mac
is a better environment to find IDEs for (although Eclipse may be
changing that).
