Re: programming job market in bay area in US

The nearest they have to here is San Francisco which is about two hours
each way by bus. Let me look to see if they include the San Jose area...
Specialized on software, now looking at:
http://san.francisco.jobs.com/jobsearch.asp?q=software&re=0&sort=rv&tm=&cy=US&lid=355&aj=San%2BFrancisco%2BCalifornia

>> http://san.francisco.jobs.com/getjob.asp?JobID=31380757&AVSDM=2005%2D06%2D24+15%3A01%3A00&Logo=0&q=software&sort=rv&cy=US&lid=355&aj=San+Francisco+California
(Java but two hours commute each way.)

>> http://san.francisco.jobs.com/getjob.asp?JobID=31349813&AVSDM=2005%2D06%2D24+02%3A05%3A24&Logo=0&q=software&sort=rv&cy=US&lid=355&aj=San+Francisco+California
(For location they give zip code, so I looked up driving directions to
there using maps.yahoo.com, found they're located near corner of BUSH
ST / SANSOME ST in SF, 2 hours one way from here.)

OK here's one in Mountain View:
>> http://san.francisco.jobs.com/getjob.asp?JobID=31255272&AVSDM=2005%2D06%2D21+10%3A26%3A39&Logo=0&q=software&sort=rv&cy=US&lid=355&aj=San+Francisco+California
>> Education: MSCS or foreign equivalent

I have no such degree.

>> Experience: 2 years relevant industry experience

I have zero industry experience. (The 2.5 weeks Macintosh Think-C
bitmapped-to-parameterization in 1992 isn't relevant to this job.)

Should I apply anyway? Yes or no.

Nothing else on first page of matches, moving to second page...

Another Mountain View job:

>> Required Skills:

Proficiency only Java (and again why do they capitalized it when it's
not an acronym?), just medium ability in C and C++.

>> preferably both

Nothing at all.

>> * Must have a good knowledge of Internet standards such as HTTP, SSL,
>> XML, HTML

Partial knowledge.

>> * Must have solid computer science fundamentals

Do they mean like turing machines and NP complete and that stuff?
Why would that be needed for this job??

>> * Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree and 6 years
>> experience in Computer Science or a related field

I have no experience whatsoever in Computer Science, except for a
turing machine emulator I made in 1968.

>> Desired Skills:
>> * Understanding of LDAP

I don't know what that means, never heard of it. Looking in Google:
http://www.gracion.com/server/whatldap.html
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is an Internet protocol
that email programs use to look up contact information from a server
Is that what spammers use to get their lists of 300 million private
e-mail addresses? Nowadays anybody putting their e-mail address in a
public-accessible registry would have to be a fool.

>> * Experience working on UNIX platforms

I've used Unix since 1991.

>> * Thorough knowledge of Oracle and SQL Server

Never had any useful access to either.

>> * Thorough knowledge of TCP/IP and communication protocols

See my remarks in earlier followup.

>> * JSP/J2EE

Yes, see my remarks in earlier followup.

>> * Win32/COM

I have no idea whether the MicroSoft Windows system I used at De Anza
Collect is Win32 or not.

>> * Ideal candiates will have a Master's degree plus experience in
>> Computer Science or a related field

I have only bachelor's degree, and experience only in software
programming, and only-distantly-related topics such as information
organization.

When they had dialup site, not on InterNet, I spent several years
responding to job ads they posted, and got not a single interview the
whole time. I have several megabytes of copies of ads and my responses
to them. Please come view my archive before I waste another minute with
their stupid worthless ads all posted by recruiters.

I clicked on "Find Jobs" which got to me a form to fill out whether I
wanted to apply for an account or already had one or didn't want one
yet, but no way to submit the form, dead end, worthless site.

I've gotten numerous spam from this site, all jobs that were totally
worthless to me. Why would I want to deal with spammers?? I'll take a
brief look only to humor you. They don't have any job category for
software or computers, only for Engineering/Architecture, sigh.

No experience.

What is exactly meant by that jargon? Do they mean like CGI?
http://shell.rawbw.com/~rem/cgi-bin/topscript.cgi
http://www.rawbw.com/~rem/HelloPlus/hellos.html

So should I apply for that job? Yes or no.

I asked for jobs near Sunnyvale, allowed "adjoining cities", but it's
showing me jobs in San Diego, Thousand Oaks, El Segundo, etc. none of
which are adjoining Sunnyvale!! maps.yahoo.com knows how far it is from
Sunnyvale to these faraway places, so how come this other Yahoo service
hasn't the foggiest idea?? Yahoo should hire me to write a RPC/HTTP
server for maps.yahoo.com which is then called by their hotjobs site to
weed out faraway jobs!

Here's one nearby (Mountain View):

>> Qualifications:
>> 7 Java / C

Expert at Java, just some C.

>> 7 Background in full lifecycle software engineering

I have been doing that on my own for many years: I conceive a need not
satisfied by available software, study whether it's feasible to
implement using my favorite programming language and other available
resources, if so then I design an overall plan and perform critical
roadblock checks to make sure the difficult parts are possible, and if
they are then I start bottom-up tool building and end up with a
toplevel application/tool. Then I use it in practice. As I realize
deficiencies, I add new capabilities and put the upgraded software back
into regular service.

>> 7 Web-based system development with Weblogic and Javabean

I've never had access to Weblogic.

I've never written any pure-JSP/XML applications that would require
JavaBeans, nor ever used a GUI-bean-environment, so I've never had any
use for JavaBeans, yet.

>> 7 Experience with business intelligence

You mean like industrial espionage??

>> 7 Experience with Microsoft Analysis Services

Degree in math preceded by top five nationwide in Putnam exam!!

Does that mean getting on jetliners to fly coast to coast five days of
the week? If so, absolutely no!!! I've never flown even once on a
jetliner.

So should I apply for the job? Yes or no.

I recognize the text and the address. I've already answered this same
ad which keeps appearing again and again, apparently to waste our time
sending resumes. I'm thinking the appropriate response is to find their
FAX number and spam it, which is not illegal if I'm responding to an ad
they posted.
>> Source - San Jose Mercury News
Ah, yes I've seen that ad in the SJMN many times.
So this job board merely scans the SJMN want ads and with no filtering
whatsoever for duplicates or crap posts it online?

> Locate job sites customized to your particular field/skills (they're

I haven't found even one in the past 12 years, what makes you think one
will suddenly turn up now in the middle of a recession?

> IMO, if you are unemployed and badly in need of employment

Just spamming random people who don't have any jobs I even remotely
qualify for? Or do the several I've described above and in earlier
parts of my huge followup qualify enough to be worth my resume?

> On rejection, and if opportunity arises, find out from the

I have no idea how to get that info. I haven't even gotten a formletter
acknoweldgement of receipt of my resume for a very long time. Sending
repeated queries down a black hole seems to be a waste of time. I
suppose if I can get their FAX number I could flood their FAX machine
until they cave in and finally respond to me out of desperation to get
me to stop wasting their paper and toner and secretary's time filtering
my FAXes to the circular file. Unless you have a better idea how to get
any employer to respond to my response to their job ads...
