Multithreading is probably the ideal solution.

But you can start a second process and use interprocess communication
in various forms in Windows. Broadcasting simple messages from one
program to another is pretty easy. However, if you are going to use
pipes etc. for transferring large amounts of data, you might be as well
off to learn about threads anyway. (They aren't all that bad.)
