Thanks Matthias for your reply.
It sounds like your University is in the envious position of being able to
assume that students have an initial (syntax-dominated) understanding of
programming, and that they can devote much more time to the practice of
program development. Introductory programming classes can often require 6
months to a year from a degree programme.
