Hi Bill,
If you are interested in learning some basic computer graphics concepts
to start on building your 3d game you might want to also look at
http://www.processing.org. It is meant to be very simple and exports
into a java applet.
But keep in mind the best thing to do is get the concepts (rotation,
translation, projections) etc right before thinking hard about
programming in opengl or processing or anything else.
