If your friends are very fluent in it then they should be able to assist you with C also.

Well, you could start with C or a scripting language like Perl, which is
easy to learn IMHO.

If you want to stay at C++, then there should be a windows port of the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection), but I really recommend you to take another language then C++.
