Nope. In the 1950s and in Irish neighborhoods, guys were still named Frances as the long or formal form of Frank and Frank was considered as a dimunitive form of Frances, which was spelled with an e to disambiguate it from the girl's name Francis.
I think you've got it wrong Ed. Frances is traditionally the feminine form and Francis the masculine, e.g.
Frances Farmer Francis the Talking Mule
Anyway, Frances Farmer ended up in a padded cell and it looks like the Sarge may someday be residing in one too.
