Intergrated Development Environments

Dear all,

I'm a university student currently asked to do a term paper the
implementation phase of the Software Development Process and
imparticulary on IDEs.

While I know a fair bit about IDEs and what they do (that's why I chose
that subject), I figured that if I asked every 1 who's on google groups
Im sure to get more "wow factor" to my paper.

So my question is this:
Could anyone give me any pointers on where to get or information on
IDEs where they came from (I'm assuming they're just the evolution of
plain old text editors) and examples of them (I'm not sure but Eclipse
looks to be the most popular amongst open source people and Visual
Studio for Microsoft programmers).

As all students I've left it to the last week so it's due 5th December
2005 and although I would like to read more about them I'd be realy
appreciative if people would reply before then so that it can assist my
paper.
