Did you ever read the and attempt the exercises in the book "The C
Programming Language" by Kernighan and Richtie? If so, that is roughly
the programming skill level they expect in CS 61 at UC-Berkeley. Or
did.
Also, if you are really want to get into UW-Madison, go find a local
college that has what is known as TA (Transfer Agreement) with UW.
Basically you more or less go to the local college for 2 years and make
sure you maintain like a 3.5 GPA. If the local college has TA, you
would stand a really good chance of getting into UW-Madison with just
one letter of recommendation. The reason I know this is because I know
two people that did this.
