reverse engineering....moronic!??!

Hi all

So I mentioned to someone I am interested in the concept of reverse
engineering, and they say that it sounded stupid. While I fully
understand that if source code is available then that is a better
option, however as people in the area of programming should know that
there are times when certain developers are unwilling to release it,
or for some other reason the code is simply unavailble.

However aside from that, I was just wonderinf if anyone here is simply
interested in the actual process and the 'tasks' of reverse
engineering software.
