Quick HyperTerminal Query

I have a quick question about HyperTerminal running on Windows XP Pro
SP2.

I have a Samsung D900 phone connected via USB to my laptop, as a
modem. I am trying to send AT commands to the phone but when I type
text in the HyperTerminal it doesn't show up. So I can type AT and
press enter and it confirms an OK message but the AT commanf i typed
doesn't show up. Is this normal or is a setting wrong somewhere?
