There are a couple of projections for which lat/lon are linear on a
map, but you should not count on it.
The size of the image is only about 1.3 minutes of arc on each side. It's not an unreasonable assumption that the projection is linear enough at that scale - after all, 512 pixels means a 0.2% distortion isn't going to be visible.
The assignment should have said that the assumption was allowed, though.
