Re: Dealing with ad hominem attacks in comp.programming

Whilst Usenet is part of real life, online relationships differ from
physical ones. I am not sure whether it is possible to have a real friend
online.
I think it is possible. I am blessed with many friends, and a healthy
proportion of them are friends I've never met! And in a couple of cases, I
have been out for a beer or three with programmers I initially encountered
online.

I'm sure it's possible. I've known (private, closed) online communities rally round one of their members, providing funding to help them meet an unexpected crisis in their lives. There are people I know well but who I've only met once, at the funeral of one of our members.

And I know at least two married couples who built their relationship online before meeting in person. Both marriages are going strong.
