This question stuck out to me, because the rest of your question
didn't imply that you want to be an academic. Perhaps you just
used the wrong word. Still, I am going to answer your question
directly, on the off-chance that you really meant it: To be an
academic, you normally need a PhD.
Over here, an M.Sc. in enough to teach in high schools, while a post
in colleges and universities usually needs a Ph.D., though sometimes
an M.Phil. is enough.

IME not for high schools, only for universities.
Typically you get the first one or two towards the end of your PhD,
and a few more as a postdoctoral researcher. However journals will
accept papers from anyone, in theory at least.
Yes. I've seen a lot of articles by those with only a Masters degree.
Also all sorts of corner cutting goes on in private colleges. By and
large they hire whomever consents to work for the lowest salary, not
the one best suited for the job.
