At 36, I have a lot of grey hear. Is that because I'm a programmer?
This message led me to believe that a whole thread
on programmers' occupational health hazards would
be in order. I'll try to start the discussion
with a few of the most obvious diseases endemic to
programmers, along with remedial measures.
(1) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This can be avoided by
vigorously wiggling your wrists and fingers whenever
you have a spare minute. (Twenty or thirty years
ago this therapy attracted unwanted stares from
strangers, but in the post-rational era this is no
longer of much concern.)
(2) Mapdot Fingerprint Dystrophy. I was joking when
I blamed Mr. Heathfield's niggardly indentations
for my ophthalmological disorders, but I do have a
rare disorder (monocular diplopia) which was finally
diagnosed by the best ophthalmologist in the region.
It seems I have Mapdot Fingerprint Dystrophy, and this
was likely caused by staring at computer screens:
the eyes "forget" to blink. This can be prevented and
treated with simple measures like frequent use of
artificial tears, e.g. Genteal drops.
(3) Irritability and infantile need to insult.
I don't want to mention any names, but readers of this
ng are often subjected to displays of this syndrome.
Although it can be blamed on people, rather than
computers, or rather the greater difficulty of
communicating with humans rather than machines, it stems
largely from the detrimental impact on one's romantic or
family life caused by one's obsession with programming.
A remedy I've found to be effective is long afternoon
sessions with talented stress-relief professionals.
(Such therapy may be tax-deductible in Europe, or even
free through National Health, but in America remember
to pay with cash.)
I'm sure others can add to this list of computer-related
diseases and appropriate remedies.

Has mental activity got anything to do with grey hear? Not in your case.
I think you should check your pedigree back a few
more generations, Mr. Heathfield. I'm sure there's
more than 25% Scottishness there.
