Ohh the memories of that machine same time frame. Real front panels
with lots of blinking lights. Those were the days when you could start
a run and leisurely go to the cafeteria for dinner and expect results
shortly
after you returned.

My first experience was around ten years later at college. Sets of
stylish tall cabinets with arrays of flashing lights near the top
(decsystem-10).

Not hands-on though, you could only see this stuff through the glass wall
of the control room. To use the machine you had to book time on a terminal
(usually an asr33), where you keyed in programs in algol60, cobol,
fortran, or, for the intrepid, macro-10.

I am so pleased that my first encounter was with something that you
could get your hands on - an IBM 1130. It was followed shortly by terminals
to machines in glass cases (DG Eclipse, IBM 370, Sigma 6) and then by a
keyboard I could hold in one hand with a computer in it that was a close
match to the IBM 1130 in power and memory - a TRS-80. All this between 1974
and 1980. It was a remarkable period to get into computing in, we went from
punched cards to commodity home computers in an amazingly short time.
