The standard answers to these career questions are:

- have fun. If you are not having fun, you are not doing
anyone, anywhere, any good
- use Test Driven Development to avoid debugging
- use a lite, easy language like Ruby
- write Web pages, to get rapid feedback from simple effects
- hit http://sourceforge.net , download sample projects,
and try to tweak and extend them
