I would like to develop something to create audio files but I'm not
sure about what format I should output the files in. I want iPods to
play them so the format must be one of MP3, AAC/M4A, Protected AAC,
AIFF, WAV, Audible audiobook, or Apple Lossless. MP3 I believe has
patent issues so not sure if I can create them in that format. WAV
files are my preference but may be too large.
Has anyone any suggestions on the best way to go here? I may have to
stick to the WAV file. At least it's easy to program.
my MP3 player (one of the ones by Meizu) supports FLAC, which I
personally like (don't know though if iPods support FLAC).
many MP3 players also support Ogg/Vorbis, which if so, is also free of
patent issues, ...
of the given list, however, it is as you say: MP3 files have patents
(should only really be that much of an issue for commercial usage of
encoders though), and WAV files are often large.
one can make smaller WAV files, but at a notable cut in quality (for
example, by encoding them in 11025 8bit mono or similar), and they are
still large in comparison to MP3 (88.2 kbps, for a somewhat lower
perceptual quality...)
