Hello all,
I have set up a wiki for source code which is available for anyone to
use. It is intended to
* present source code clearly
* allow documentation to be present either with the source code or
separately
* allow anyone to make updates to the code and documentation
http://codewiki.wikispaces.com
Q1. How is it different from other source code repositories?
First, the site content is not owned by any person or company.
This means that others can add code to it without feeling that they
are contributing to someone else's web site. It is truly a community
resource. Neither does the site cost money to maintain. Its contents
can remain indefinitely as Wikispaces provides free hosting.
Second, anyone who sees a fault in code or documentation can correct
it.
This is the true essence of a wiki. Others are encouraged to make
changes as needed. There are checks and balances to see that the
original code is not lost. See the FAQ for details.
Q2. How will a person benefit from the site?
The site allows wide peer-review. Any code uploaded can be checked and
updated by anyone browsing. There is an option for discussion prior to
making changes.
If you don't want to publish code you can still
- download and use code posted by others
- browse to learn from code and documentation others have published
As implied by the last point the site is not for developing code from
scratch. There are other sites on the Internet for that purpose. Code
posted to codewiki should already be complete or it should be
educational in some way.
It won't suit everyone but may be appropriate for others. Take a look
and see if you would find it useful.
