While the Corman, Leiserson, and Rivest book is widely popular as an
advanced undergrad/intro grad textbook how does Skiena's The Algorithm
Design Manual stand up? Would anyone recommend it over CLR or merely as
an additional reference?

I have it.

I like it.

The format is very different from other algorithm books. Each
algorithm is accompanied by a story of some kind.

There is also an accompanying web site at Stonybrook.
