Nothing I have said is really objective, but I do feel it would be
usefull if someone analyzed Perl like languages to a greater extent in
an academic kind of way.

From academic point of view I conclude that Perl is piece of crap. I
support the same opinion from non-academic point of view.

However, confronting opinions regarding this matter can lead to
"language war". I don't thing that this is appropriate group for such
war. Rather go to Usenet per or ruby groups where you can share your
opinion that these things are The Best Things Ever Invented.

I never said that they where the best things ever invented. I seem to
know several Java programmers who look down on Perl and Ruby, Ruby
programmers who look down on Java and Perl, and Perl programmers
who .. etc. I tend to think each probably has strengths in various
capacities and in certain scenarios I could enjoy doing any of them
depending on what I am doing, what API's are available and other
factors. I think much of what I have to deal with is political
depending on what the company you work at advocates for platforms,
tools etc. Thus what I end up using is not completely up to me but
seems to be part chance based on whatever circumstance I find myself
in. The managment and programmer teams often have criteria for what
they consider acceptable. Over the past 6 weeks I've applied for Ruby
on Rails jobs, C++, Java, and Perl, never fully knowing what any of
these companies or work might be like once you really get to know
them. I also bough an advanced Javascript book. In addition, if I ever
go back to school, I'll probably end up learning Scheme or some other
Lisp type language that alot of people probably couldn't care less
about any of that either.
