I had heard of Tachyons before, but I thought that they were only
hypothetical particles that arise from some versions of string
theories

Naw, the name "tachyon" has been around for decades as a name for many
(any?) kind of superluminal particle. The conjectured properties
depend on the theory used as a basis of conjecture, of course.

property of these theories.

Yup. Generally one prefers a theory that precludes unreal conclusion,
rather than having to add axioms to the effect of "that doesn't happen
in reality".

If I recall the positron and the muon, as well as many others, were
successfully predicated from theory, not from experimental evidence.

(On the other hand terms like "unicorn", "gremlin", and "good tax"
persist in spite of most people believing they are fictional.)
