In general, though, cheating is a serious problem with take-home exams.

On my theory of computation class for sophomores I generally use
closed book exams, but in exceptional circumstances I have sometimes
let a student do a take-home exam. Then part of the deal is that
when I have judged that the answers are good enough, the student
still has to come to my office to explain his/her solutions. I feel
that this should make cheating somewhat difficult, particularly as
with such a special arrangement I will give at most the least passing
grade.
