Orphaned Oracle Connection

Hopefully, someone can assist me.

I have a Java application that is connecting to an Oracle repository and I
need to incorporate some code to deal with my client taking down Oracle at
a set time every week.

I have a process that runs every hour, and when the client takes Oracle
down, my process receives an error, which is expected. However, my code is
written in such a way that the next hourly update should grab a fresh
connection and process as designed. But, for some reason, I continue to
get a "broken pipe" error every time I run my process. The only way we
have found to fix this so far is to restart our application server
(WebSphere).

I have heard of an orphaned connection causing problems of this nature, but
I have never seen one and therefore do not have a clue about how to fix the
problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Joe
