Yes, we (US Geological Survey, Water Resources Discipline) are
developing Java apps to interact with our Ingres databases on
50-something Solaris boxes.

That I can't answer, as I too am new to Java (in fact, I am just
learning the language so I can start getting into the Java development
area) and haven't gotten into using the JDBC stuff yet.
