I'm sure there exist alternatives, but this is the most widely used, and performance is pretty good, in a test a couple of years ago MySQL and Oracle were running neck'n'neck with that driver. If you have a particular problem, it could be that there exist a solution ... after all it's widely used and someone may have had the same difficulties before you.
Maybe someone has written a JNI-wrapper for the C/C++ interface?
