Wanted: Java accessible database for Palm PDA

I would like to be able to put some kind of small database, preferably
relational, on my Palm PDA (Tungsten E to be exact) so that Java
applications can access the data as directly as possible.
Now, there may be some way for a desktop Java application to access a
PDA-based database directly and that would be great but I suspect it
would also be quite expensive and cost is definitely an issue to me. I
would be quite happy if the PDA database could simply be hotsynched to
a desktop version of the database and then my Java application could
access the desktop version of the database. It isn't even necessary
that I be able to update the desktop copy of the database from my Java
application, although that would also be nice if it were possible.
Can anyone point me to a solution, preferably a free one. I'm on a very
tight budget and have to do things free if at all possible. (No, this
is not a competition or school assignment ;-)
We are not talking about large volumes of data or complex data; pretty
much just short text strings, integers and dates. I want to keep track
of attendance at a small club via my PDA, then have that data be
accessible to a Java application that will generate membership cards
for people who have attended sufficient meetings.
