Having user choose own editor

Long time reader, first time poster.

I'm working with XML and giving the user the option to edit, save, print,
etc. However, I want the user to use a third party editor rather than
create one myself. I want a way that the first time he tries to edit, he
has to pick an editor application (like a web browser picking an application
based on a mime type). Can this be done?

Second, suppose the user chooses the wrong application. How can I allow the
user to fix it.

Thanks
