weird applet-display problem..

I am running this applet I wrote, UI displays differenctly from machine to machine, and I don't know why, pls see.. http://www.francesdelrio.com/applet.html for screen-shots..

I want it to look like on top, w/standard applet-splash (spinning star), and colors in applet are better... on some machines get a diff. splash (just gray area w/coffee cup on top left) and colors in applet look a bit off..

why does it run differently from machine to machine (both machines in both these cases are running 1.4.2..) thank you..
