Java (Mustang) fonts on Linux vs Windows

I am using Linux (FC5 to be precise) for the first time and I am
disappointed with the appearance of my Java Swing programs and other Swing
programs in general. In particular I notice that the fonts do not appear to
be rendered as "attractively" as on the Windows XP platform for example. I
am referring to sub-pixel antialiased fonts in Mustang.
Now I realise that fonts in general (i.e. fonts in non-Java applications as
well) don't tend to look as nice as they do under Windows but my impression
was always that Java/Swing used its own font renderer and therefore I
concluded that those fonts would look the same on any platform. Clearly
this is not the case.
I have read numerous articles on how to improve general font appearance
under Linux by installing MS True Type fonts and other methods but none of
these has any effect on the appearance of the Java 6.0 fonts. Is it simply
a case of Java fonts not looking as good under Linux and that there is
nothing that can be done about it or is there some way to tweak the
appearance and get a more appealing result?
Thanks,
Wes
