I am beginning to think this is a bug, and
have started trawling through the bug D/B
looking for similar problems. Unfortunately
searching the Bug D/B is horrendously slow
from Australia (or maybe it is just
horrendously slow from anywhere?) and I
have yet to see any bug report that is
closely related.

As an aside. That was a damn fine SSCCE, I
wish I'd put a little more effort into reading
your comments before I opened my big mouth in
that first post. Could have saved us all
some bandwidth. ;-)
