Instant Chat System for 1000 simultaneous clients

Hi all,
I want to implement instant messaging system that will use client
server interface and can handle 1000 simultaneous clients connections.
PLease give me suggestions or links to codes.
tutorials etc. for that

can it be easier to implement using java api's ?
