Also, to effectively use 4Gb of RAM, you will have to run a 64bit OS.
I don't think we can blame the application's programmer(s) because it happens with *every* Swing application I have ever tried and on every Windows machine I have ever used over the years. This includes my own Swing programs which are certainly not doing anything unnecessary when they are minimised or unminimised. And yes, while it is true that you need a 64-bit OS to fully exploit all of the 4GB of RAM, my testing has included one super-fast machine with 8GB RAM running 64-bit Vista. The behaviour is identical on all machines other than that it takes a little bit less time to wake up on the faster machines.
