It is the jvm's implementation that is different on the various platforms
but I would expect the jvm to interprete the bytecode consistently.

When last did you attempt to do the installation? and which distro? Linux
installation is becoming more and more of a doddle nowadays. I've used
Mandrake, SuSE and RedHat and they are all pretty much the same with perhaps
Mandrake slightly easier to install. If you have some spare disk space or a
spare drive, you can set up your system for dual boot either to XP or to
Linux. Best of both worlds. Subscribe to one the Linux groups and start
lurking there.

Not that I am aware of. But if I was you, I'd use BlueJ to achieve a
consistent approach (look and feel) for both platforms
