query drive parameters

Hi all

I have searched for days trying to find the answer to this and I'm sure
it's just a matter of being pointed to the right place (maybe something
to do with native functions which I know nothing about but probably should).

How do I get drive parameters in Java? Things like file system type,
size of drive, type of thing that the letter is connected to? ie. when I
do getRoots() where do I go to get more info about the drive letters
that are returned?

Namely I'm trying to write a CD cataloger tool as a programming exercise
and I want to start assuming I don't know which drive is the CD. That
led me to wondering how do disk tools get all that info from the drives
any way?

Thanks for any pointers
