Have Adaware myself (AFAIK, it doesn't interfere with Java). Don't know
the other two. But they should not mess up Java...

You're saying it, not me ;-)

I'm thinking that maybe the so called rootcertificates have expired or
gone invalid (they are used for secure browser connections like HTTPS).
Did the applets stopped working after Jan 1st (that would be a typical
date for expiration)?
Goto <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com> and see if there is an update
available for Internet Explorer, probably called "Update for
rootcertificates", and probably in the 'non-essential updates' category
(don't know exact name, but I installed them November last year).
Restart browser afterwards.

Additionally you could install "Java Cryptography Extension (JCE)
Unlimited Strength Jurisdiction Policy Files 1.4.2" from
<http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html> (at the bottom of the
list). It's a zip file call "jce_policy-1_4_2.zip" or similar, and
contains two JAR files (and two text docs). These JAR files,
"local_policy.jar" and "US_export_policy.jar" must be copied to the
\lib\security subdirectory of the JRE installation folder (typically
C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2\lib\security\). They should replace the
two JAR files with the same name that are already there. Restart browser
afterwards.

Check on the Java control panel (Windows menu Start -> Settings ->
Control Panel -> Java ), on the Proxies tab, that it's "Using Browsers
Settings" (so the applets use the same settings as the browser).

And also check if your firewall doesn't block HTTPS connections (XP's
firewall it was, wasn't it). Did you maybe install XP SP2 and the
applets stopped working after this?
