Why not do a clean install of winXP, but this time leave room for a
linux partition? Linux is pretty easy to use now, and that might be an
expedient end-run around winXP. (Make sure to install winXP /first/
and linux /second/, otherwise winXP will wreak havoc on your MBR and
give you a headache.)

If you're determined to stick with winXP, how about cross-posting to
microsoft.public.* for winXP, there might be someone over there whose
had a similar experience.
