Firstly, please take the following advice as a *rough guide*, and use
extreme caution.

One way to find out what you actually have installed, and in what locations,
is to check it via the Registry Editor. Assuming you know how to use this
tool [type 'regedit' at the command line], take a quick look at:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/JavaSoft

There might be several entries [they look like folders] here. The one(s) you
can *probably* safely remove are those called 'Java Development Kit' and
'Java Runtime Environment'; the rest [particularly the 'Java Plug-in']
should probably be left alone.

To ensure that you are not using any part of either the 'Java Development
Kit' or 'Java Runtime Environment', check the 'JavaHome' keys in each of
these entries, and compare them to the same key in 'Java Plug-in'. If they
are different [i.e. contain different folder locations], then it is
*probably* safe to remove both the 'Java Development Kit' and 'Java Runtime
Environment' [however, I'm not guaranteeing this].

Of course if you do decide to remove any items, you should do so through the
Control Panel, and not simply delete the installation folders.

Again, I urge that you use caution. It's not that you can cause any great
disaster but it is always a painful process reinstalling and reconfiguring
software applications. The 'five minute reinstallation' often seems to
stretch into hours :) !

I hope this helps.
