Re: Help needed building 3D modelling/mapping application

Hello all,

A couple of colleagues and I are creating a 3D modelling application called
Sapphire, intended primarily for creating 3D models and environments for
games. The application is intended to promote a number of innovative
features that make modelling of both organic and artificial objects a
doddle. It's going to be free, open-source and extensible. I've put up a
small website discussing the project in more detail and showing screenshots
of it's current incarnation at www.btinternet.com/~richard.asbury/sapphire.

I am curious why you eschew Blender? http://www.blender3d.org You may have good reasons... but I'd love to hear the good reasons. Blender is of course not written in Java. It's C++ and Python. Maybe you like Java better than either of those 2 languages. Certainly C++ is no fun, but I'm curious why you'd choose against Python. Particularly, because Blender is not a "from scratch" project. It's got a very large open source community already attached to it. I'm tempted to say that the tool is more important than the implementation language; again, why are you choosing to go your own way?
